Learn to make a calico bag with your own textile artwork!

harriet - age 13

Harriet, age 13*

*massive apologies to Harriet, whose age I put as 12 instead of 13 on my leaflet. She's 14 next week! x

What happens on the day?

After an introduction and settling in to the class for the day, Philippa chats with the students about topics they can use for a theme for their bag. She demonstrates the techniques the students will use throughout the day, which include initial sketches for design, choosing appropriate fabrics and trimmings and applying the fabrics to the bag. The students are then 'let loose' to choose their fabrics and start to work on their bags! Philippa closely supervises and helps the students, along with an assistant. The students will be given a briefing on how to safely use an iron to work with the textiles.

Once the students have chosen their theme, Philippa asks them to give her two or three 'title words' for their piece and then free-hand machine-embroiders these words onto a panel which the students can attach to their bag. This a great way to personalise their work even more!

What's the idea of the workshop?

The main idea of the day is to produce a bag which is fun and useful whilst exploring texture and colour, unleash creativity and is an opportunity to learn new skills. Often, children are nervous about creatiing a 'realistic' drawing. In this workshop a main aim is to take the fear out of art by letting the student create an image that doesn't have to be 'picture perfect' - it's about exploring, trying new methods and being free in their approach.

How long does the workshop last?

The workshop lasts for 6 hours, including a lunch break of 45 minutes. Lunch can be provided for an extra £5, or you're welcome to bring your own lunch

How much does it cost?

The cost per student is £35*, which includes materials. Workshops run with a minimum of 4 students and a maximum of 7.

* Schools, please contact Philippa about educational discounts and student numbers.

Where are the workshops held?

Public: Philippa holds workshops at the Fallen Knight Hotel, Ashby de-la-Zouch.
